Bruno's Pizzeria and Grill

My favorite italian restaurant in the east.
A tiny little restaurant with no-frills decor serving hearty italian pastas and pizzas at affordable prices, hey whats not to like!

image

Squid Ink pasta with prawns - I love squid ink anything and this was especially good with a great punch of flavor

image

Seafood pizza with great chewy crust

image

image

Seafood risotto chockful with fresh plump scallops, mussels and sweet prawns. mmm

image

Beef which was the disappointment of the night - way too much sauce plus wilted salad and dry mash potatoes urgh. Stick to the pasta and pizzas

Jewel Cafe

Food here was pretty good!
Menu was asian-fusion whats not and may sound confusing but what we had were decidedly tasty and familiar.

image

The Umami Prawn Capellini - I am drawn to anything on that menu that describe itself as Umami. This pasta had a Japanese twist with bonito flakes, seaweed and roe. Nicee

image

Chilli crab linguine came complete with mantou, a tad too watery but heyyy mantou!

image

The surprising star of the meal was the apple crumble. Melt in your mouth butter crumbs with a dollop of good vanilla ice cream was the perfect sweet end to our meal

My Awesome Cafe

The signboard of My Awesome Cafe reads Telok Ayer Chung Hwa Free Clinic and the cafe is features cement screed floors, pipe lighting and metal chairs - in other words the kitsch hip cafe that I unironically love

image

The big breakfast with croissant, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and generous serving of avocado
Pretty average (I saw pictures online where the scrambled eggs looked incredibly creamy, too bad we didnt get those when we visited)

image

image

The awesome salad on the other hand was pretty awesome. Huge portion and very tasty, esp that duck rillette mmmm

The orchid garden in Jalan Kayu

If you turn just at edge of punggol, follow the dirt path pass the foreign workers' dormitory, take a left and go all the way in, you will reach an orchid farm.

Fate brought us to a bbq there, and we were welcomed with open arms by the owner - a warm and friendly uncle gifted with the greenest of fingers as demonstrated by the beautiful flowers around us.

I dont call myself a lover of flowers but these were just so beautiful. Rows and rows of healthy blooming orchids in all bright vibrant colors.

Such old school sights are becoming quite rare in Singapore, so lets all cherish what we have around us eh.

Lola's Cafe

The forever crowded Lola's cafe at Kovan, we popped by on a rainy evening for an early dinner and still had to queue.

image

Coffee and the popular wings. (You can get one-for-one coffee with the entertainer app!)

image

The honey paprika wings were sweet, crispy and altogether delicious. Although I felt that the flavor laid more in the skin and did not really penetrate the meat.

image

The mains were decent though nothing to shout about

image

image

Ending our meal with a decadent nutella tart mmm

Will come back to try the brunch menu, if only it wasnt so crowded

Mellben seafood @ pasir ris

Back to Mellben for more crabs! This time at pasir ris, which the eastie in me is deliriously happy about. (We dont have that much good food here in the east i.e. pasir ris, so must celebrate more)

Mellben in my opinion serves the sweetest crabs.

image

The signature crab bee hoon soup, rich thick soup filled of crab essence, remember to order extra soup because you are going to want more

image

The golden sand crab came in a luscious creamy buttery salted egg yolk sauce, soooo good.

image

And finally laksa crab with too much 'hum' , we went overboard and added too much, scaring even the waitresses there lol

Cholesterol overdose but ah we throw all health concerns out of the window with crabs this good.

Khun Mee Thai Noodle Bar

image

That was some pretty good thai noodles, a pity the egg was over-cooked. However the noodles were springy and the sauce tasty.

image

A decent rendition of my favorite som tum, this version has salted egg in it too!

image

Mango sticky rice - the mango wasnt as sweet as I would like but what can we expect, we are not in thailand eh

Overall I felt the food here was quite authentic and tasty, will definitely come back

Guangzhou Nov 2014 - Travel Diary Pt 4

Guangzhou has several attractions and we visited a few (Chiamlong safari park, Chiamlong theme park and the wong fei hong temple/museum). Of the three, I highly recommend the safari park which is basically a zoo. Huge place with several types of animals and shows that will occupy old and young equally (who doesnt like cute elephants performing tricks!), one day is almost not enough.

Best parts of the zoo include

image

baby animals! Theres a nursery where visitors can see tiger cubs, baby monkeys and this adorable baby chimpanzee; he was adorably mischievous and we spent a good 20 mins watching him get up to his antics

image

A train ride round the "safari" where animals were divided into different parts of Africa based on where they originated; we got to see zebras, bears, even camels grazing

image

Close up of animals! Visitors get to feed the animals (for a small fee) and it was so much fun! We fed this lovely giraffe leafy greens and took many a selfie with him. Other animals available for feeding include tigers, elephants, cute little monkeys etc

image

And the main attraction - pandas!
Chiam long is home to many pandas, my absolute favorite animal; I spent at least a good hour watching these cute animals going about their own business

image

As luck would have it, we had the privilege of viewing the world's first panda triplets. As the mama panda would only take care of one cub, the other two would have to be taken care by staff. And well taken care they were, with a huge nursery filled with toys.

Mama panda with the other cub. Awww

Guangzhou Nov 2014 -Travel Diary Pt 3

More food updates from Guangzhou

image

image

Seafood from Shangxiajiu street, looked tasty but was disappointingly one-note; not much taste other than the spices used.

image

Dim sum at a nondescript restaurant opposite the hotel and darn was it good dim sum

image

Liu sha bao passed the test

image

and the xo fried carrot cake was probably the best I ever had. Would go back to Guangzhou just for this dim sum again

image

Explored the mall next to the apartment, this place serves meat in a large pot with seasoning/spices. This was fish (non-spicy) and the below was prawns (spicy). Both were pretty darn tasty though the spicy version got too numbing after awhile.

GuangZhou Nov 2014 - Travel Diary Pt 2

So we stayed at the GuangZhou South & North International Apartment which was pretty awesome. Luxuriously decorated in typical chinese style (gold accents, chandeliers, brocade wallpaper etc) and comes furnished with microwave, fridge and a washing machine. Each apartment fits 6 comfortably (3 king size beds) but for some reason only comes with 1 toilet so there may be some awkward situations. But still given the location (next to Beijing lu) it was great.
The train station is a distance away (~10 mins walk)

As mentioned Guangzhou is basically a less modern Hong Kong so of course, the food was awesome. Especially so if you are a Cantonese (going back to your roots and all that right)

image

cant do without your combination plate of meats, not as good as the ones in Hong kong but still decent

Chanced upon this eatery that serves food from another city (cant quite remember) but the porridge filled with peanuts, seaweed and other bits n pieces plus that dumpling soup was excellent.

image

Nothing beats a chok (rice congee) and cheong fun (rice roll) breakfast. The congee was rich and thick, evidence of many hours over a charcoal stove. The orange one came with cordycep but tasted much like the rest (well at least theres some health benefits?). The cheong fun had too much fun, too little ingredients. Still tasty.

image

Some  street food at Shangxaijiu pedestrain street. clams and oysters which were way too garlicky it killed off pretty much any seafood taste urgh. I did get some pretty tasty grilled octopus at the stall next door though

GuangZhou Nov 2014 - Travel Diary Pt 1

Some amusing sights from my trip to Guang Zhou in Nov last year.

image

Victoria Secret's knock-off?

image

Suggestive trashbin at the zoo

image

Say what?

image

Spotted at our apartment (which was pretty awesome, think gold interiors and chandeliers)

That said, Guangzhou is basically Hong Kong just less crowded
