Tanjong Beach Club Revisit

Back to TBC for brunch because we have 1-for-1 with the entertainer app! The entertainer app is pretty awesome, with sweet food deals at tons of places!

Couldn't resist the sweets - dont the donuts look lovely?

Brunch was the TBC burger, pretty good one I must say but wow the coffee here suck balls.

Tim Ho Wan

So we waited a good 6 months for the hype to die down before daring to venture anywhere near this place.  Good thing too cos we only have to queue for less than 10 mins.  Tim Ho Wan is definitely not a place for big family/friends gathering (which is how I like to eat my dim sum), more of a hey the queue is short lets eat here kind of place.

Honestly, I thought it was over-rated. Some items were good, some average and nothing was really life-changing. Imperial Treasure  (specifically the super peking duck brunch) still remains my top dim sum place in Singapore.

Of the 4 heavenly kings, I thought the carrot cake was the worst. Not much taste nor texture.

With the Malay cake faring the best. Granted I dont typically order this but Tim Ho Wan's version was very soft and moist. Just the right amount of sweetness too.

And lastly the baked bbq pork buns. This was good too, I love the crispy crust that blended in with the sweetness of the meat. Unfortunately I had to compare this with the awesome polo buns served at Carlton's Wah Lok and the latter was a superior version.

Matsuo Sushi Restaurant - Revisit

I call this the chirashi that started it all.  The first time I fell in love with chirashi hence starting my journey into trying all available chirashis in Singapore.

Available Mondays and Fridays (set lunch) so do plan your lunches on these days!
Theres just something special and comforting about this particular chirashi. You know how you can never forget your first love? Yes eating this is exactly it, somehow everything just taste fresher and sweeter.

New Year's eve

Finally finishing up 2013! This year's countdown was a quiet affair, just a nice dinner with friends. Great way to welcome 2014 - no hustling with any crowds, good food + wine + company and infinitely better than last year when I was down with food poisoning.

Baked chicken - before

And after!

This chicken was stuffed with pork and beef (a chipoeef? bee-por-ken? )
Anyhows, it was delicious.

Speaking of delicious - lotus biscuit spread. So good, so sinful.

Fat Cow

You only need 5 mins of browsing through instagram photos of people lunching at Fat Cow and you know you absolutely have to dine here.

Japanese style steak house, minimalist wood-based decor and a lunch set menu that lets you sample the beef here for less than $40. Its no wonder this place is always booked.

Each set lunch comes with a salad, chawanmushi, miso soup and dessert. I got the Fat Cow Donburi ($38) featuring wagyu beef and onsen egg (dont the words wagyu and onsen bring hearts to your eyes?)

The sides were all nicely done.

And of course the star of the show. The wobbly onset egg with perfectly medium rare wagyu on top a bed of Japanese rice. mix everything together and devour.

And yes we each ordered a side of foie gras (only $9!), even the friend who ordered the foie gras don.  Im starting to think that the Japanese do foie gras better than the French. This was one of the better ones I have had.

Symmetry

Symmetry is now my new favourite place to have brunch.

Here's why.
First of all, I love the menu. A pretty menu always perks up ones appetite dont you think? Plus handwritten notes are just the best.

Secondly, I love the decor + vibe of this place. Serious industrial chic with exposed pipes, cool metallic interior and all.

Third, even though the place was packed and the service staff seemed severely short-handed (it was the holiday season, can't blame them), everyone who served us were cheerful and polite. Kudos to the bartender/barista dealing with all the drink orders (i think the ordering system was down and they had to resort to post-it pads), calmly pulling espresso shots and mixing cocktails while the flurry of orders surround her. Seriously, I got anxious looking at all the orders but she did once lose her cool. In fact, she even found the time to let me try some of the milkshake she was making.

Last but not least, great food. The truffle scrambled eggs in the Big Breakfast dish was perfectly creamy and I love the hearty roast beef sandwich, fries and all.

Will be back!

Penny University

Post-Christmas brunch. Its great that more cafes are sprouting up in the East although not nearly enough! Though I can still probably count the good ones on one hand.

This place is crowded, not surprising given the low supply/high demand of brunch places in the East. Penny Uni has a great laid-back decor with wide booths and large communal tables. Such a small place though!

Turkish Eggs - Poached eggs with smoked salmon and yogurt. Definitely a more unusual item and I would say makes for an acquired taste because the yogurt packs quite a punch. But the flavours go weirdly well together.

Poached eggs - decent version and reasonably priced.

Carrot cake for desert, this was ok but I still like my carrot cake more "coarse" - Cedele's version is the best!

Maple & Market

So thankful that I was able to get Sarah, owner of the sweet little cafe Maple & Market to do up the dessert table for my wedding. Tried the lemon earl grey cake and I really liked it! Moist and not too sweet (perfect for the older folks) that I think I am going to choose this for my wedding cake.  Ordered a cappuccino (the barista was apologetic that they couldn't serve me it with skinned milk because they dont specialise in coffee) and honestly, they are short changing themselves cos the coffee was pretty good.

Will be back for more baked goods, everything looked so good! If only the place were bigger!

Sabio

mmm tapas! Honestly there is no where in Singapore that can be compared to the tapas served in Spain, its not just about the food its about the whole atmosphere, the mood, the people. Try as we may, we will not be able to replicate that "siesta" feel.

Food-wise, Sabio comes up pretty well. This place is trendy, one of those places full of expats and people standing around drinking.

Starting dinner off the only way with Sangria  (1 litre jug $46)
The Sangria was ok, could do with more fruits though

Jamon Iberico! ($25) The ham here is awesome! Must order

Oysters with red wine vinaigrette ($11 for 2). Fresh and went very well with the vinaigrette. No complains here.

And numerous other dishes. The better ones were the bone marrow which was nicely seasoned and the scallops. That sauce, so good we ordered extra bread just to mop it up.

Overall, I thought Sabio is a great place for Tapas with most of the dishes decently done and a few stand outs. Only the sangria was disappointing (well you can always pop over to the wine bar next door for drinks, which was what we did).
Next up, I would love to try Sabio by the sea. I am sure tapas taste 10x better with a touch of the Sentosa cove breeze right?

Sushi Kou : Revisit

Back again for more chirashi!

I blogged about how pretty the chirashi bowl looked so I won't go on but really won't this bring a smile to your face? And that fat sweet scallop!

Paired with a serving of uni, quite a generous portion for $18!
Very fresh and sweet too! Nothing is worse than biting into a foul rank slice of uni (looking at you sushi express)
