Lots Gourmet Stop

My favorite place for brunch in the east. We have tons of cool bars but next to nothing when it comes to brunch places. So it was a delight to discover Lots Gourmet Stop, and so near my house too!

Located rather inauspiciously opposite Changi prison, Lots is a  cute, unpretentious cafe with a decent menu (but no deserts though!). It also stocks quite a few unique beers so do try them.

Admittedly we were a bit thrown off by the texture of the scrambled eggs but they tasted pretty good.
The big breakfast which comes with your choice of eggs, pancakes, bacon, tomato and baked beans.

I would recommend the eggs ben. Love the crusty bread paired with perfect runny eggs and salty salmon

Kith Cafe

Now I have been to both ( Park mall and Robertson Quay) and I very much prefer the one at Park Mall. Probably because I went to Robertson Quay for brunch and it was blazing hot.

I like having brunch at Kith. Its unpretentious and straight-forward.
Refreshing from the usual slew of hipster or atas places.

Hummerstons

Hummerstons was the new kid on the block at the beginning of this year, much talked about (ala the current Skyve bistro).

The italian job poutine ($13) - beef + bacon ragout with mushrooms onions and cheese

Gooey cheesy goodness, it was very satisfying to pick up a cheese + tomato soaked fry and popping it into your mouth. Though I felt that there should be options for a bigger portion because this dish is really meant for sharing in a group

The Seafood stew ($36). Very happy with the fat scallop but honestly the dish was kinda one-note to me with the nuances of the seafood lost in the tomato sauce.

The Hummerstons burger ($26), huge and topped with bacon, mushrooms, tomato etc. The best thing about the burger was the bread. Very unique flaky chewy texture, def addictive. I would recommend sharing the burger though cos that thing's huge.

I came back again with some friends and had a tried a few other dishes on the menu. In my opinion the best dish Lamb Ribs so do go for that. Overall though the food is pretty average and for the price, I might be happier at one of the many restaurants at robertson quay.

Service is great though, very friendly and helpful staff. We came during Valentine's day and every girl was given a rose and every guy a cookie. How cute!

Mortons' Steak house

For Christmas 2011, Edwin wanted a nice steak dinner, so what better place to go then to Morton's right?
Now this place is traditionally American, so portions are huge.
Apologize in advance for the poorer quality of the pictures, place was dark!

Onion loaf the size of my face. Had to resist stuffing myself with too much bread

We opted for the surf and turf meal (its not on the menu but request for it and they will present it to you on a small card). I thought it was pretty value-for-money, I cant eat a huge chunk of meat anyway.

First course was the caesar salad, a mountain of iceberg and what looks like a normal main-course portion. Once again, had to resist filling up my stomach #firstworldpains
Salad was alright but I guess nobody really gives a damm about the quality of the salad at Morton's

Whats red meat without some red wine.

Edwin had the bacon wrapped scallops with the fillet. Scallops were plump and juicy though the accompanying jam paste was a bit redundant. Dont think much needs to be said about the meat, we all know that Morton's standard is up there.

I opted for the crabcake. And damm was it good. Fresh and sweet chunks of crab held with very little flour (or the 'cake' component).  I would come back here just for the crabcakes alone

But since this is a post about Morton's, let me just throw in a picture of the steak closeup.
Btw, I could only finish about 1/3 of it, we had to pack quite a bit back.

The meal came with other sides as well - we had the spinach + mushrooms and the sliced potatoes. Both were decent.

Morton's was a lovely experience and I think one that everyone should have. Yes its not cheap but good quality food + service has a price.

Kuriya Penthouse

I had my first Omakase experience on my birthday this year - at Kuriya Penthouse
Located at the top of Orchard Central, this was a promised "meal with a view".

Well some what of a view... The walkway outside of the restaurant really dampened much of it. Imagine enjoying your meal and grazing out, only to find random passer-bys staring at your food. Perhaps the owners could rent out the walkway too? Convert it into an open air lounge area where diners can chill after their meals ala Sky on 57.

The decor was somewhat disconcerting too. For a high-end restaurant that Kuriya brands itself on, it sure didnt seem that way. Tables were far too close to one another and there was just a general lack of intimacy and exclusiveness that I have come to associate nice Japanese restaurants with. Thankfully these were one of the few 'negatives' that night. And if I am paying $150++ for my meal, I can afford to be a tad more picky right

On to the food, we each got the chef recommendation menu and at $150, it was one of the more affordable Omakase in town.

First up, Crab meat with salmon roe. Fresh sweet crab meat paired with a sticky concoction of seaweed and mustard and salty roe. One of those dishes that must be eaten as a whole, the components do work well together.

Sashimi course next and how PRETTY is the plating! I almost couldnt bear to eat it. Never tried sea cucumber sashimi before (in the bowl) and after having had it, Im not much of a fan. Taste wise not too bad but I couldnt deal with the too chewy texture. The rest of the sashimi though were exquisite. Fresh and sweet and melt-in-your mouth deliciousness. The tuna belly in particular, stood out. If this werent just the second course, I would have gone "thats it, done for the day, nothing would beat this"

3rd course was another pretty plate, ok make that 3 pretty plates.

Refreshing soba with seaweed and chicken

Nicely grilled salmon. Those black beans (not sure what they are) but they are sooooo sweet!
I would eat a bagful of them.

Runny egg and a sweet prawn. I was confused initially because one of the waiters described this as tofu (wth waiter?!) and I was amazed by how the chef made the tofu looked so much like an egg till I took a bite. That say, you cant go wrong with a runny egg.

The highly anticipated Stone Grilled Wagyu beef steak

And disappoint it did not. Fat streaked and tender, we oohed and ahhed through this course.
Meat heaven, this must be what it feels like.
Yes, this is when you get your dollar's worth.

Scallop tempura encased in rice grains. The tempura was pretty decent though I did think the scallop one was too oily.

Simmered red rock fish. MMM i love steamed fish, esp one as sweet and fresh as this with an awesome broth. Could do with less bones though

The last course- Oyster Claypot rice.
This was the course where you get to fill your stomach if your aint full yet. The dish was average to me, mainly cos I prefer my oysters raw.

Because it was my birthday, the waiters presented me with a cake (which the boy had shamelessly requested for when making a reservation)

The cheesecake was deLIGHTful.

As an additional treat, my desert came encased in an ice bowl!
How do they do it?! Theories : spray water into a bow + apply liquid nitrogen, layer of water between 2 bowls. Btw, the chef refuses to tell us his secret.
It was a lot of fun playing with the ice bowl though

Moving on, fruits wise, they were sweet but ironically a tad too frozen.

In all, I had a wonderful Omakase experience. The waiters were friendly (each of them wished me Happy Birthday on my way out :) ) and I had a lot of fun eating, which is what dining should be all about right

eM by the river

Brunch at eM by the river. Located at the end of Robertson Quay, its a nice and quiet place (i was there on a wkday morning) to watch boats sail by over a cup of coffee

Pancakes that looked fluffy but were really heavy and thick.
They tasted good though but best for sharing. Not a fan of whipped cream but wow the one accompanying these pancakes were the lightest I have ever tasted

Another gorgeous looking plate, this time the eggs atlantic
Perfectly poached eggs with creamy hollandaise is the perfect way to start the day.
Not the best I have eaten (that honor must go to Prive) but one of my top 5 thus far.

I like eM by the river. Great ambience with reasonable prices and cheery staff.

La Villa

Celebrated two of my dearest friend's birthday at La Villa.
My first thought upon walking in : this would make a nice venue for a wedding.

Intimate dining area, inviting reception (for the bride and groom to greet guest of course) and a cozy little outdoor area. Not forgetting a pretty neat bar

Calamari rings with paprika and pizzaiola dip ($19)
Great crispy rings, however the portion was a tad tiny for the price

Funghi pizza - With fried egg, Pancetta ham and truffle ($22)
Now this was value for money. And you know how everything taste better with a runny egg?
Enveloped with the smell of truffle, this is one good pizza

Capellini - Angel hair pasta with Lobster ($28)
Oh this was good. I love food with a strong seafood taste, that umami punch that one only gets when eating stuff like truffle/sea urchin
Could eat a whole bucket of this sauce

Meat Platter for 3 ($108 i think)
Meat overkill, some of the items were good (sausages), some were average (steak, chicken), some i really disliked (veal)
Order only if you are a serious meat-lover. Else, stick to the pizzas and pastas

Service was pretty inconsistent unfortunately. Some of the waiters were not too responsive but a waitress in particular was really helpful and sweet. Our cake was ruined due to poor baking by Canele (wtf Canele...) and she felt so bad for us she gave us tiramisu on the house.
